  • This is somewhat of a special interest for both of us

FND is a condition in which patients experience neurological symptoms, such as weakness, movement disorders, sensory symptoms, and blackouts, without a structural disease of the nervous system being identified. It's a real and disabling condition, not imagined or "made up." The exact causes of FND are still not fully understood, but it’s believed to be a problem with the "functioning" of the nervous system rather than a structural disease, and it often occurs in response to stress, trauma, or psychological distress.

For individuals with FND, psychological factors and stress might play a significant role in the onset or exacerbation of symptoms, making the disorder appear "psychosomatic" in nature. However, it’s crucial to approach FND as a legitimate medical disorder, as simplifying it as a psychological issue would not be accurate or helpful for patients.

  • Psychosomatic illnesses or disorders are conditions in which psychological factors play a significant role in the manifestation or exacerbation of physical symptoms. The term “psychosomatic” doesn’t refer to a specific illness but rather describes a relationship between the mind (psycho) and body (soma). In psychosomatic disorders, mental factors like stress and anxiety may contribute to physical problems.

    Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS):

IBS is a common gastrointestinal disorder that is influenced by stress and anxiety, causing symptoms like abdominal pain, bloating, and altered bowel habits.

    Chronic Pain Disorders:

Some people experience chronic pain that isn't entirely explained by a physical injury or damage. Stress and emotional factors can significantly affect pain perception.

    Tension Headaches:

Stress and anxiety often trigger these headaches, characterized by dull, aching pain and tightness in the forehead.

    Fibromyalgia:

Although the exact cause of fibromyalgia is unknown, it's observed that stress and emotional trauma often contribute to its onset and exacerbation.

Skin Disorders (like psoriasis and eczema):

Emotional stress can exacerbate various skin conditions, including psoriasis and eczema.

    Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJ):

Stress and anxiety can lead to jaw clenching and grinding, contributing to TMJ disorders.

    Hypertension (High Blood Pressure):

While various factors influence blood pressure, stress and anxiety can contribute to hypertension in some individuals.

    Heart Disease:

Stress, depression, and anxiety have been linked to the development and progression of some forms of heart disease.

    Asthma:

Emotional stress can trigger asthma attacks and worsen the overall condition.

    Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD):

Stress and anxiety can exacerbate symptoms of acid reflux and GERD.

It is crucial to understand that psychosomatic disorders are real and valid illnesses, not imagined or “all in the head.” These disorders illustrate the complex interplay between the mind and body, and addressing both physical and psychological factors is often necessary for successful treatment and management. If you suspect you have a psychosomatic disorder, consider consulting a healthcare provider for a comprehensive evaluation and appropriate care.
